Today is the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic photographs and moments in sports history - the Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics. On the top of that podium was Tommie Smith, with his fist clenched, and fellow American John Carlos joining him. Australian Peter Norman, who wore a badge supporting his fellow competitors, also shared the podium.
John Carlos - now Dr. John Carlos - wrote a book about the moment ("The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment That Changed the World) and appeared early in the history of our show to promote it. We replayed that interview from October of 2011 on today's show to commemorate the anniversary.
Carlos talked about his mindset on that podium and where were are as a society now (in 2011, obviously). To this day, it is one of my personal favorite conversations we've ever had on the show. Take a listen:
