50th Anniversary of RFK's Speech in Indy

Fifty years ago today was one of the most tragic days in American history: the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Robert Kennedy was campaigning in Indiana that day, giving speeches at Notre Dame and Ball State before venturing to Indianapolis that evening. When he had learned of Dr. King's assassination, a distraught Kennedy attended the previously scheduled rally, just northeast of downtown at 17th & Broadway. But, instead of the usual rousing campaign speech, RFK decided to go in a different direction. He informed the crowd of the terrible news of the day, and proceeded to give what many believe to be one of the greatest speeches in modern American history:

Kennedy himself was assassinated just over two months later.

RFK's legacy lives on with that speech, words that still hold true today, and with the gorgeous Landmark For Peace statue, which stands proudly on the site of his famous address.

"What we need in the United States is not division, What we need in the United States is not hatred,

What we need in the United States is not violence, and lawlessness, but is love, and wisdom, and compassion towards one another,

Feeling of justice toward those who still suffer in our country, whether they be white or whether they be black."
