Most fans - at least the ones outside of a certain six-state cluster in the northeast portion of the United States - are in an uproar over yesterday's controversial Patriots/Steelers overturned touchdown.
In case you are living under a rock and missed it, here is the Jesse James play which was ruled a touchdown on the field, but then overturned (with the official explanation):
I get that you have to complete the catch and then establish yourself before the ball crosses the plane. But, here's my problem: do we know that ball definitely hit the ground on its own? It sure looks like James' hand was under it, and there didn't seem to be a conclusive angle showing that it wasn't. If the ruling on the field was incomplete, I would have far less of a problem with the call than overturning that based on non-existent conclusive evidence.
Scott Kacsmar of Football Outsiders had a great thread with "catches" that were overturned or upheld on replay that were far less of a catch that James' non-reception yesterday:
I'm fine with the NFL's stance on "completing the catch", but the inconsistency of the rulings are maddening.
