Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Ryan O'Hearn made history on Tuesday night (July 7) by setting a franchise record with 10 RBIs in a single game. The 32-year-old achieved this feat with a grand slam and two three-run homers against the Atlanta Braves, leading the Pirates to a 12-4 victory at PNC Park.
O'Hearn's remarkable performance helped ace right-hander Paul Skenes secure his first win since mid-May, ending a nine-game winless streak. O'Hearn's 10 RBIs are the most in a game for the Pirates since the team began play in 1882, and he became the 17th player in the Modern Era to achieve this milestone. His performance also marked the first time a player has driven in at least 10 runs in a game since Shohei Ohtani did so in 2024, according to MLB.com.
O'Hearn's offensive explosion began with a grand slam in the first inning, followed by a three-run homer in the third. He added another three-run shot in the sixth inning, bringing his home run total for the season to 16. His RBIs jumped from 51 to 61, as reported by USA Today.
Despite the opportunity to tie the major-league record with a fourth home run, O'Hearn settled for a single in his final at-bat against former teammate Jorge Mateo, a position player pitching for the Braves. O'Hearn's bat from the game will be displayed in Legacy Hall at PNC Park, and his helmet will be sent to Cooperstown, marking his place in baseball history.
O'Hearn, who joined the Pirates this season after signing a two-year, $29 million contract, has quickly become a key player for the team. His performance has helped transform the Pirates' offense from one of the worst in the league to one of the best.
