You can tell a lot about a state based on its regional fast food chains.

These mom and pop chains give a taste of the local flavor and usually have some quirky local history as a part of its name or story.

Even though a lot of these regional chains don't cross state lines, people are fiercely protective of these local businesses and will the be first one to say how a small town shop is so much better than McDonald's.

That's why foodie website Mashed complied of the list of the best regional fast food chains in every state. The publication picked the the chains based on their personality, local quirks, and if they have a food that can't be found any where else in the U.S.

So what's the best in Indiana?

It's Schoop's Hamburgers.

Here's what Mashed had to say about the popular spot:

Schoop's Hamburgers locations are clustered in the northwest corner of Indiana with classic aesthetics and, according to fans, delicious tastes. Over the years, Schoop's has received great press, with DineRank claiming its burger was utterly great.
So why are Schoop's burgers so good? It's a fresh beef patty that's been smashed down on the griddle until it's seared and crispy on the edges (via Eater Chicago), which can then be topped with bacon, chili, bbq sauce, jalapeños, and/or mushrooms. Schoop's enormous milkshakes also get a lot of love, attesting to this fast casual's longevity.
